What should an AI visibility audit actually record?
Start with a short set of real buyer questions: a service need, location when relevant, a budget or timing constraint, and a comparison question. Record the platform, exact wording, date, and whether the answer includes a search or citations. Save the cited URLs and note whether the facts about your business are correct. Repeat comparable checks rather than treating one favorable answer as proof of permanent visibility.
Illustrative audit question: "Who can help a small contractor improve Google Maps visibility and stop losing estimate requests?" The useful review is not just whether your name appears. It is whether the response understands your actual service, refers to a relevant source, and gives the buyer a working way to contact you.

Begin with five real buyer questions covering price, an urgent problem, provider selection, compatibility, and your brand. Keep the exact wording and record the platform, date, location context, signed-in state, and whether web search was used. Run the same set again under comparable conditions. Save the answer and cited page URLs privately; do not publish customer information in an audit.
| Signal | Record | Possible action |
|---|---|---|
| Brand mentioned | Yes/no and the exact description | Correct a factual error on the source that supports it |
| Owned page cited | Actual linked URL, not just a brand name | Strengthen the relevant answer and its source evidence |
| Competitor appears | Which competitor and which supporting source | Compare scope, proof, freshness, and usefulness of that source |
| No answer or unavailable feature | The observed state and test conditions | Report it separately instead of inventing a zero ranking |
Example calculation, not a site result: 2 brand mentions in 5 completed answers is a 40% mention rate for that sample. One owned-page citation in those same 5 answers is a 20% citation rate. Neither measures demand, clicks, customers, or visibility across all AI systems. Keep each platform and the sample size visible.
When Search Console is connected, compare the relevant page's clicks, impressions, queries, country, and device over equivalent periods. Google includes its AI search-feature traffic in the overall Web performance reporting; that does not provide an all-platform AI leaderboard. Google explains AI-feature eligibility and measurement.
Can a search system understand what you do?
- Service clarity: publish a specific explanation of the problem you solve, the work included, meaningful limits, and the next step.
- Business identity: make the real organization, responsible person, phone, website, and service area consistent across genuine sources.
- Evidence: connect verifiable examples, relevant experience, authentic reviews, and useful explanations to the service being discussed.
- Readability: ensure important answers are available in page text and reachable through normal links, not only an image, a form, or a chat conversation.
- Technical access: check the live response, canonical URL, crawl controls, indexability, and any security challenge blocking legitimate visitors or crawlers.
What does structured data help with?
Accurate Organization, Person, Article, and other relevant markup can describe relationships already supported by the website. It is not a place to invent reviews, credentials, locations, or hidden services. A quiet About page can explain who is responsible without repeating a person's name throughout every sales paragraph.
For Google's AI features, the standard search fundamentals still apply. Google says there is no special AI schema or extra AI text file required to appear. Keeping an optional llms.txt directory is not proof of inclusion, and enabling a crawler does not mean a provider has already indexed, cited, or recommended the business.
What should you fix first?
If a business fact is wrong, correct the authoritative page and the relevant source that carries the error. If the business is described vaguely, clarify the main service and publish useful answers to actual buying questions. If the recommended competitor has a relevant, well-supported source page while yours has only a slogan, improve that page's substance rather than adding repeated keywords.
Do not copy a competitor's text, mass-produce city variations, or build a private loop of nearly identical websites to manufacture endorsements. Related sites can link where useful to readers, but self-created links are not independent customer proof. Our business-listing cleanup guide explains how to work through conflicting identity information.
What can a useful report promise?
A useful report can show which facts were corrected, which pages were improved, which requests succeeded, and how comparable answers changed. Website analytics can show attributable visits and inquiries where data is available. Do not label an isolated test, a branded mention, or a crawler log as revenue from AI.
There is no single universal AI database to submit a business to and no dependable number-one position across Google, ChatGPT, Gemini, and other systems. The work is to improve the sources and customer experience you can control, then measure what changes. A scoped review should say what access is needed and what is still uncertain.
Questions before you buy
Can you guarantee my business will appear in every AI answer?
No. Platforms, queries, locations, available sources, and generated answers vary. A legitimate service improves factual clarity and useful source material without promising control over another company's recommendations.
Do I need a special AI database submission or AI schema?
There is no universal submission that guarantees discovery across AI systems. Google says its AI search features do not require special AI markup or new machine-readable files. Use accurate structured data and accessible, helpful content.
Can I just put more keywords or my name in hidden code?
Accurate owner and organization metadata can describe real relationships, but invisible keyword repetition is not a sound visibility strategy. Keep the markup truthful and supported by accessible business information.
Should I remove the SEO work and concentrate only on AI?
No automatic switch is justified. Preserve a useful website, accurate business information, and working inquiry paths. Review AI visibility alongside normal search and actual business results rather than treating it as a replacement for everything else.
Sources and scope
Published prices are service-menu references, not universal market rates. Examples are illustrative unless explicitly identified otherwise. Final scope and outside costs require confirmation.
